A row appears once a grower has signed, a baseline soil test is on file and a result date is set. A date that passes without a result renders as overdue.

Jar test, then one small block
Test the tank mix you actually use, in a jar and then in the field, before anything runs at scale.
Dilute at least 1:10
One part product to ten parts water in furrow. Ammonium reads 244 mg/L and conductivity 374 mS/m, and both scorch germinating seed at full strength.
Band beside or below the seed
About 5 cm to the side or below, or through the irrigation line. Concentrated product never touches the seed.
Keep the fertility programme
A microbial inoculation with a little starter nutrition. Not a line item in the nutrition plan.
Take care with salt in dry regions
Repeated undiluted use builds soil salt in low-rainfall soils. The interpretation names North West and Free State.
Nothing close to harvest on edible grain or feed
Apply early, well before grain fill, or to the soil instead. The reason is the opportunistic bacteria and the aflatoxin-forming Aspergillus DNA.
That target is the protocol author’s recommendation. No completed trial stands behind it, which is why these trials exist. Foliar application is in no protocol we publish until phytotoxicity, pathogen and residue testing reports.
What a grower signs up to.
- Five hectares, minimum
- Below five, a paired comparison cannot carry field variation and the result survives nobody's scrutiny.
- A paired control
- Treated strips beside untreated strips. Same soil, planting date, irrigation and fertility programme. One variable changes.
- A baseline soil test
- Accredited laboratory, before the first application, at the grower's cost. Without it the end-of-season numbers describe nothing.
- Consent to publish either way
- Signed before the trial starts. A trial that shows no response publishes here in the same detail as one that does.
- A capped number of places
- Each place is an agronomist's season. Places are limited and applications are read in order.
